The Groat was struck in silver between 1480 - 1483 and shows a new heraldic cinquefoil for its mint mark. Edward died suddenly in April 1483 leaving his young 12 year-old prince Edward V to succeed, who later, together with his younger brother Richard, became known as “the Princes in the Tower”.
Information On The Coins Commisioner:
Edward, born in 1442, took the throne in 1461 during the “Wars of Roses”, the civil war between the Yorkest and Lancastrian branches of the royal house of Plantagenet. His marriage in 1464 alienated many of his supporters, including Warwick “the King-maker”, who joined the Lancastrians and reopened the civil war, defeating the king at Edgecote in 1469. He left for France only to return in 1471 to defeat and kill Warwick at Barnet and retake the throne from Henry VI.
