Men's ornamental range - the necktie originated in the 17th century when Parisians saw Croatian mercenaries in the 30 Years War wearing knotted neckerchiefs; they adopted this style and started a new fashion, to wear lace or silk 'cravats'. (There is speculation that the word 'cravat' came from 'Croat'.) The tie as we know it today has been around since the 1920s, and this tiepin is based on a 19th century English piqué pin in tortoiseshell.
