This St George and the Dragon Brooch has a 3d design that depicts St George on his horse, killing the dragon with his lance. The brooch is gold-plated and finished by hand with a mix of enamelling and painting techniques to accomplish the intricate detailing.
The legend of St George and the dragon is ancient: a dragon made its lair next to the water source for a town so to collect water the townspeople had to distract the dragon with a human sacrifice, which they chose by drawing lots. One day the princess was chosen, but St George rescued her by slaying the dragon. This gold-plated and enamelled brooch is modelled on a brooch from the workshop of Froment-Meurice and Francoise Desire, Paris, 1855.
