The Sword of State Miniature

Presented to James IV by Pope Julius II in 1507, the Sword of State is the handiwork of Italian craftsman Domenico da Sutri. It's part of the Honours of Scotland, the oldest Crown jewels in Britain, exhibited at Edinburgh Castle alongside the Crown of Scotland and the Sceptre. Adorned with thematic symbols and etchings, the sword boasts a wooden scabbard covered in red velvet, a belt woven in silk and gold, and a remarkable silver-gilt buckle. The sword's past is marked by turbulent times, having been hidden and rediscovered, and its blade bears signs of repair after likely damage during Oliver Cromwell's era.
