The Aethelred II Penny is an Anglo-Saxon coin minted in silver at the Canterbury mint. The coin was crafted by the moneyer Leofstan and is recognized for its long cross type design. The Canterbury mint was just one among nearly 90 other mints that operated in Anglo-Saxon England.

Information On The Coins Commissioner:
King Aethelred II, often referred to as Aethelred the Unready, was born around 968. He was the son of King Eadgar and Queen Aelfthryth. His reign was characterized by repeated invasions from Danish fleets and armies. Unfortunately for Aethelred, even substantial payments to the Danes, often referred to as Danegeld, did not halt these invasions. For a brief period, between 1013 and 1014, he lost his crown to King Sweyn of Denmark. The title ""The Unready"" derives from the Old English term ""UNREDE"", which means ""without counsel"" or ""ill-advised"".
